The Western World Since The Industrial Revolution - 1100 Words
How Economic And Social Forces As Well As Social Stratification Have Shaped The History Of The Western World Since The Industrial Revolution (Essay Sample) Content: SOCIAL STRATIFICATION IN THE WESTERN WORLDNameInstitutional AffiliationDateSocial Stratification in the Western WorldIndustrialisation has been taking part in the world in the last three centuries and has led to so many changes. Some of the changes that are evident are the development of industries and the invention of different scientific equipment. This paper will be discussing the social and economic forces and how they have helped in shaping the history of the Western nations since the Industrial Revolution. The industrial revolution took place between the 17th and 19th century. During this period, the rural societies, and the agrarian in both Europe and America became urban, before this period, manufacturing of different products was done in peoples homes by the use of simple handmade tools. Industrialisation marked a change in special-purpose powered machinery, mass production and factories. Both the textile and iron factories and steam engine development played a great role in making the Industrial Revolution occur. During this period, there was a significant improvement in the transport, banking, and communication systems. There were a variety of manufactured goods, and the standards of living were improved. Before the Industrial Revolution took place, people used to live in rural communities, and their lives existed around farming.Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution since it had great coal and iron deposits that were necessary for industrialisation. Britain was also stable economically and politically and was the leading colonial power in the world. Britains colonies were its primary source of raw materials and also a market for their manufactured goods. High demand for the British goods led to mechanisation of the industries so as to produce more.Today, social stratification is evident as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Social stratification is the hierarchical division of the society according to class, caste , or rank. It can also be defined as the systematic unequal distribution of power, status, and wealth (Lenski, 2013). The technology and industrialisation of the higher income nations have hurt the predicament of the poorer countries in the world. The rich industrialisations has encouraged child labour, and horrible living conditions, since they get the benefit of material things. The industrialisation of the Western countries in the early 1800s was fast while that of the low-income states was slow. Today, the low and middle-class countries in the world are busy trying to catch up with the growth and development of the world powers. This has led to many families sending their children to do forced labour, and all they get is little pay. There is gross sociological inequality that is demonstrated by the living standards of people in the world, and it is astounding. For instance, in the U.S, children spend most of their summer enjoying their life and watching television, swimming of pl aying computer games. On the other hand, children from low-income countries spend most of their time working in factories for little pay and no food. The least Industrialised countries in the world make up almost seventy percent of the global population. These countries are faced with extreme poverty and they are mainly agricultural. The Western nations tend to be the most economically stable since they were able to exploit the less developed countries, most of which were their colonies. The powerful Western nations still sell goods to the third-world countries, and some of them take them on debt and the pile up debts that take years to pay. This way, the Western nations gain economic advantage over the less-developed countries that owe them a lot of money.Stratification by economic status has led to the formation of social classes. Social stratification and socialisation have positive and negative effects in our lives. The Western nations have created multinational companies that ha ve branches in different countries (Kerbo, 1996). The multinationals often exploit the developing countries for cheap labour and raw materials. What they give to these countries is just a fraction of what they would offer to employees in their countries doing the same jobs. The countries where the multinational companies are based are the ones that receive the most profit and benefits from the businesses. These multinational corporations have helped shape the global stratification and keep it in place. All the modern societies we see today are stratified due to the unequal distribution of resources. Stratification led to job specialisation. Some were involved in pastoralism and other in horticultural farming. It clearly indicates that not everyone in the society needs to be involved in the same activities. A rise of the industrialised societies contributed to increased stratification that distinguished between the rich and the have-nots. The technological advancements led to the form ation of a new social group of skilled workers. These people had knowledge in computers and different ways of using the gadgets. The technology that is being utilised in the post-industrial societies, which are mainly the Western nations has contributed to an increased stratification in the world.During the Industrial Revolution, the elites in the Western nations took people from the low-income countries as slaves. These people worked as slaves in the farms and industries that belonged to these rich, an...

The Impact of Divorce on Children Essay - 806 Words
In the United States today, we live in a society that has perhaps one of the highest rates of divorce amongst all other industrial nations at a rate averaging around 40 to 50 percent. Of that staggering rate of divorce, 60 percent of those involve children. Because of this, more than one million children go through their parentsââ¬â¢ divorce each year. Now, during this time of divorce a great focus seems to be drawn between the adults, but at what point should we wonder about the children? What changes and potential consequences are thrust upon the child forced to go through what might be considered an extremely demanding ordeal such as his/her parentsââ¬â¢ divorce. I will tackle this topic with the assistance of various resources that haveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The trauma and distress of children going through divorce is often produced from overwhelming senses of vulnerability as the family seemingly collapses, grief at the loss of what felt like an intact family as well as at the loss of the non-custodial parent, and even a strong sense of powerlessness to being unable to prevent the divorce from happening. The simple act of divorce alone can be a very stressful event for any child. As such, the looming realization that things will be different, yet not knowing how, often plays to the fears of the child. Divorce for a child can often lead to reduced contact with the non-custodial parent (often the father), lower standards of living, moving from one home to another, changing schools, having more responsibility thrust upon them, or even the potential for the custodial parent to be less psychologically or physically available for the child when they need them. All of these are environmental forces that can lead to an overwhelming amount of stress for any child, leaving them in a negative position and making it harder for them to cope and adjust to the divorce. Often times children canââ¬â¢t mentally cope with the divorce, either. With children being as egocentric as they are, it is impossible for a child to look at the conflict between their parents indifferently. Many children are stu ck with a sense that they are the reason for theirShow MoreRelatedThe Impact of Divorce on Children1482 Words à |à 6 PagesThe Impact of Divorce on Children Emily Grandy Abstract The discussion entitled The Impact of Divorce on Children takes an in-depth look at the impact divorce has on children academics. The Federal Budget Process free essay sample
Running head: The Federal Budget Process The Federal Budget Process Abstract This report focuses on the federal budget process of the United States of America. The annual federal budget begins with a detailed proposal from the President in February. The budget request is developed by the Presidentââ¬â¢s Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Next, Congress creates a blueprint called a budget resolution that sets limits on how much each committee can spend (or reduce revenues) over the course of the year. The terms of the budget resolution are then enforced against individual appropriations, entitlement bills, and tax bills on the House and Senate floors. In addition, Congress sometimes uses a special procedure called ââ¬Å"reconciliationâ⬠to facilitate the passage of deficit reduction legislation or other major entitlement or tax legislation. The Federal Budget Process The federal Budget of the United States of America is the Presidentââ¬â¢s proposal to the Congress recommending funding levels for the next fiscal year which begins on October 1 It is through the budget that the nation chooses what areas it wishes to leave to pri vate choice and what services it wants to provide through government. We will write a custom essay sample on The Federal Budget Process or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When enacted, the budget represents the decisions of the Nationââ¬â¢s elected representatives as to which governmental services should be provided at the Federal rather than the State or local level (Mikesell, 2011; Myers, Rumburg, Johnson, 1989). The basic law governing the content of the presidentââ¬â¢s budget is the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 (Posner, 2009).This law not only created the requirement for the presidentââ¬â¢s budget, but set in motion ever-increasing demands for information to support the preparation and packaging of the presidentââ¬â¢s budget. Further, by the creation of the General Accounting Office, this law codified the need to check spending before the fact (Posner, 2009). On or before the first Monday in February, the president is required to submit to Congress a detailed budget request for the coming federal fiscal year (Mikesell, 2011). However, in years where there is a change in administration, the budget is submitted later (Policy Basic, 2011).The budget process is guided by a set of procedures laid out in the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 (Apfel, 2008). In the last four decades, Congress has reformed its budget process several times (Reischauer, 1990). The major reforms include the 1974 Congressional Budget Act; the 1985 Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act; and the 1990 Budget Enforcement Act (Heniff, 2001). Prior to the 1974 Congressional Budget Act, Congress did not have a budget process that considered the entire budget, rather it had separate appropriations, tax-writing, and authorization processes (Heniff, 2001).The centerpiece of the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 is the requirement that Congress each year develop a ââ¬Å"budget resolutionâ⬠setting aggregate limits on spending and targets for federal revenue (Policy Basics, 2011). The limits set by the budget resolution, along with a companion ââ¬Å"pay-as-you-goâ⬠, apply to all tax or spending legislation developed by individual committees as well as to any amendments offered on the House or Senate floor (Policy Basics, 2011).The federal budget process includes; the Presidentââ¬â¢s annual budget request, the congressional budget resolution, e nforcing the terms of the budget resolution in the House and Senate, and budget reconciliation process (Policy Basics, 2011). The presidentââ¬â¢s budget is the first step in the complex process of funding the federal government (Yourish Stanton, 2011). As mentioned above, the president is required to submit a detailed budget request for the next fiscal year on or before the first Monday in February.

Why Ironman Is a Better Superhero Than Batman free essay sample
Throughout his acting career, he has won more than enough awards to last him a lifetime. He has won awards like the ââ¬Å"Best Performance by an Actorâ⬠at the Golden Globes, to the ââ¬Å"Man of the Yearâ⬠at the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. As for Batman, due to the many interpretations of the story throughout these years, itââ¬â¢s difficult for me to keep up with even what the actorsââ¬â¢ name is. Not to mention, whomever the 50 actors were who played Batman probably arenââ¬â¢t even half as good looking as Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man and Batman are both superheroes with no actual powers. Bruce Wayne, the first, hidden half of Batman, and Tony Stark, the brilliant man behind that Iron suit are both extremely wealthy men. They have chosen to make good use of their wealth and take advantage of all their money to help save the world. In other words, because they werenââ¬â¢t born with superpowers like most comical heroes, they had enough money to literally invent their own powers. We will write a custom essay sample on Why Ironman Is a Better Superhero Than Batman or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, disregarding their slight similarities, Iron Man is, and foremost, a much greater superhero than Batman. Letââ¬â¢s start with their laboratoriesââ¬âwhere all the magic happens. Iron Man has not only an amazing lab, but also his house itself is breathtaking. Who wouldnââ¬â¢t adore a multi-million, if not, multi-billion dollar house overlooking Malibu, literally hanging over a cliff? And, from my understanding, Tony Stark actually built his house himself. Back to the point, his lab is spacious, itââ¬â¢s modern, high in technologyââ¬âI mean, for crying out loud, he built a computer-based assistant whoââ¬â¢s just as smart as he is. Nowadays, technology is such a massive part of everyoneââ¬â¢s lives. Today, that is whatââ¬â¢s going to get you somewhere in life. Batman, on the other hand, after all these years, is still in a cave. Someone needs to remind Batman that he isnââ¬â¢t actually a bat. He is a billionaire; why not use his billion dollars to build himself a decent lab? His house is secluded enough; itââ¬â¢s pretty much in the middle of nowhere. This isnââ¬â¢t the 60s, Mr. Wayne. We have new technology in the 21st century. Make us of it. Secondly, their superhero suits. Letââ¬â¢s not forget that the purpose of having a suit is not only to make a bold statement, but to protect themselves. Iron Manââ¬â¢s suit is made of Iron; hence, his name. Itââ¬â¢s built with all these high technology devices and weapons integrated into it, it talks to him whenever heââ¬â¢s in battle and needs assistance, and his suits are literally made just for him. Theyââ¬â¢re programmed to fit only Tony Stark, unless addressed otherwise by him. Batmanââ¬â¢s suit is elastic. Heââ¬â¢s better off painting a ballerinasââ¬â¢ leotard and tights black and wearing that. His initial defense against a gunshot would be a cartwheel or a simple whole-body swing, but Iron Man doesnââ¬â¢t even need to move. His suit protects him, which is how itââ¬â¢s supposed to be. Batman has to carry his weapons around in the little holes on his black-turned ballerina costume, and his only assistance remains at homeââ¬âAlfred. Evidently, Batman just isnââ¬â¢t as practical as Iron Man is. Thirdly, Iron Man has better fighting tactics than Batman. Yes, he commits several killings, but he only kills the bad guysââ¬âthe people who are harming us and do the world worse than they do well. He kills them and everyone walks away, thatââ¬â¢s it. Batman is too scared to kill anyone. In a nutshell, what Batman does to his enemies and the bad guys is hurt them, make them feel a little pain here and there, and then send them home to their wives and kids, all beat up. And do they return? Yes. All of the people Batman has fought end up coming back and fighting him again. There is always that aftershock. This brings me to my last point: Iron Man never brought hell on earth. Sure, he blew up a field of terrorists, but he paid for itââ¬âliterally. All the weapons he blew up with those terrorist were all his. The worst collateral damage was the Stark Industries, which was fine with him, he could just build everything all over again. Batman casted thousands and thousands of innocent people to a death-filled hell on earth. While he was in a nasty prison doing yoga and 100 push-ups with that, his people were dying. I understand that he had to gain his strength back, but if he were as smart as Iron Man, he could just swing his arms and his suits would fly over to him, and he couldââ¬â¢ve gotten himself out of their in a matter of minutes. Instead, he waited months and months. Batman just isnââ¬â¢t very smart about this whole superhero thing. The bottom line is, because Batman just isnââ¬â¢t as practical with his money or his life, and his head hasnââ¬â¢t quite snapped into the 21st century yet, Iron Man, objectively, is a better superhero. He is smart, he is funny, he is good-looking, and overall, he just knows what to do. If youââ¬â¢re going to live a double life as a superhero, you have to be concrete. Letââ¬â¢s face it; Batman isnââ¬â¢t concrete. He is literally stretchy. Even Hannah Montana leads a better double-life than Batman does, or at least sheââ¬â¢s smart about her other identity.

Seperation of Powers essays
Seperation of Powers essays The Judicial Branch in Regard to Separation of Powers The Doctrine of Separation of powers is that political power should be divided among several bodies as a precaution against tyranny. The ideal is opposed the absolute sovereignty of the Crown, Parliament, or any other body. The blueprint for United States separation of powers is laid out in the U.S. Constitution and expanded upon in the Federalist Papers. The checks and balances of the US government involve the horizontal separation of powers among the executive (the Presidency), the legislature (the two houses of Congress themselves arranged to check and balance one another), and the judiciary (the federal courts). There is also a vertical separation between the federal government and the states. Defenders of separation of powers insist that it is needed against tyranny, including the tyranny of the majority. Its opponents argue that sovereignty must lie somewhere, and that it is better, and arguably more democratic, to ensure that it always lies within the same body. The U nited States wanted to instate a government structured in such a way that each branch was separate but equal. We will see, however, that it is not always a black and white arrangement and that the judicial branch has often found itself in the gray area of sovereignty. The theoretical reasoning behind the need for separation of powers is laid out by Publius (Jefferson and Madison) primarily in Federalist Papers # 49 51. In American discourse separation of powers is more of a name than an accurate description. In application, none of the three branches is really separate from the others. This was the argument that James Madison addressed in The Federalist, no 47. The Anti- Federalist charge was that The several departments are blended in such a manner as at once to destroy all symmetry and beauty of form, and to expose some of the essential parts of the edifice to the danger o...

Lassa fever in west africa Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6500 words
Lassa fever in west africa - Coursework Example However, an accurate clinical diagnosis and using management techniques, the virus is capable of being controlled or even being diminished and the health of individuals infected in the West Africa regions improved (Buchmeier, Torre & Peters, 2007). It is estimated that deaths caused by Lassa fever in West Africa ranges between the gaps of 5000 to 10,000 out of two million cases of Lassa fever cases reported yearly. The majority of the highest percentages of death reported are documented to be from West Africa. This implies that for every death caused due to Lassa fever, West Africa is the region which is mostly affected. Diagnosis of Lassa has proved to be a challenge for the government and clinical officers in West African countries, therefore making it extremely difficult to determine the mortality rate associated with the Lassa virus (Pasqual, 2011). In addition, due to difficulty in the diagnosis of the virus, many individuals affected with the virus rarely seek treatment in hospitals or associated institutions like clinics. Moreover, the prevalence of the diseases in some countries is brought by rodents. These places are high risk areas and spreading to a larger populations for example Mali (Dworkin, 2011). Lassa fever is characterized by the delays caused in the cellular immunity which is responsible for fulminant viremia. The rates at which at which Lassa fever is reported in West African countries like Sierra Leon is 8-15 percent, Guinea4-55 percent and Nigeria 21 percent. Conversely, in other parts of West African countries like Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal, the cases of Lassa fever reported here are considered to be sero-positivity. This means that cases of Lassa fever acts as positive serum reaction because of the presence of antibodies in the body. An analysis of the

A Day and the Life of 9-11 Essay Example for Free
A Day and the Life of 9-11 Essay I remember the account like it was yesterday. It seems like any other morning I got up early with a reminder call from mom. (She work overnight) I head back down the hallway to the siblings room I wake up the boys first. They were always the hardest to wake up. ââ¬Å"Time to get upâ⬠, I yelled like a screaking alarm clock as I jumped excitedly up and down the bed where they slept. All you can hear is the moan of the boysââ¬â¢ stops and pleading to get more sleep. Next stop back to my bed room where my dear little sister lays sleeping I walk up to the bed and shake hear and say time to get up. I politely give her a wake because never gives me trouble when it is time to get ready for school. I roll my eyes because those troublesome brothers of mine I know are not up out of that bed and I have to repeat the previous process and this time up each one out of the bed. While I spend time doing this my sister is up and at it she in the bathroom washing her face and brushing her teeth not having to be told what to do. In my thought I say I love that little girl. My brothers of course are moving in slow motions like a sloth in a tree. I am aggressively pushing them along and barking orders at them tell them what to do like a drill sergeant in the Army. ââ¬Å"Wash your faceâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Brush your teethâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Make sure you brush your hairâ⬠. Now that I have gotten the boys up and moving I head to the kitchen to get breakfast going. Not long after finish the siblings start rolling in. My sister first so nice and chipper like she is skipping in a garden and picking flowers as she goes, how she can be that happy that early in the morning I will never understand. I finally boys come dragging their feet into the kitchen and flopping in a chair. Still grumbling about being up so early complaining about how I could have let them sleep longer. Now here is where the really trouble begins now that they are all in the same room. So now the brothers start to bother their little sister since the breakfast they are eating seems to miraculously give them a turbo boot of energy. All I can hear is ââ¬Å"Stop leave me aloneâ⬠, laughing and name calling going at the table behind me. See more:à Manifest Destiny essay My job as a big sister mother like role comes in to play; I turn to them and yell ââ¬Å"Leave her alone before I start on yall!â⬠Breakfast is all done now it is time to round up the troops and get them to the bus stop. Making sure they have their book bags and everything that goes in it. Once we have jackets and book bags on we make our venture up the winding driveway to the bus stop. After the bus arrives I head back down the driveway, and now have to get myself ready for school and head back down to the bus stop to get myself off to school. Now on the bus were take normal route and pickup kids. We head to the middle school to drop them off and now we head to the high school. While heading to the high school the bus driver received a call and was taking alternate route to drop us off at the school. We can see the route we normally take and there are cars backed up down the street. We thought that we had another bomb threat since that was kinda normal at our school. Once inside and we headed to homeroom we were told that planes had crashed into a building in New York. We turned on the news in the classroom because we wanted to know the details of what was going on. As we watched the news started report the approach of a second plane and we watched in real time the second plane crash into the second building. Not really understanding what was going on the new reports that it was a terrorist attack happening. Instantly it made since why we had to take a different route to school that day. Our school is Next to one of the biggest Army training bases. So of course the locked down the base no one in and no one out, which caused the traffic to back up around the school. The students reaction was mixed the students bombards the teacher with questions that at this time she had no answers for. Some student continues like it was nothing, other started crying knowing that they had loved ones that worked in those building. Many were sad because they knew that their mom and dad maybe deployed somewhere and would be gone for a long time. My reaction was why anyone would want to crash planes into these particular set of building, why would they risk their own lives doing so. While all of this was going on the intercom came on and announcing that the teacher turn off the television and try to continue the day as normal. In reality the day would not every be normal. We had so many unanswered questions. How could we continue the day like we had not seen what we seen or heard what we heard. Some teacher complied with the instruction others did not. One of the teacher found that it was important to have some clarification on what was going on. She began to tell us about what was being reported through the day. Since now it is almost time to go home there had been more progress on what had just happened that morning. She said that there had been a terrorist attack and the people they think is responsible were a Muslim group called Al Qaeda. My next thought was what Al Qaeda is and what did being Muslim have to do with it. I later learned that prior to September 11, 2001 the country moved along at its regular daily pace. Conflict and wars have been a component of the United States since the beginning of time. There are three sources conflict: human rights, global terrorism, and environmental problems. Many see terrorism as a way to hide greed, racism, and the conquests of power. Terrorism is defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigations ââ¬Å"as an unlawful use of force or violence against person or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectivesâ⬠(Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2002-2005). Terrorism makes the statement that demands attention and affects every person in every country around the world. On that clear Tuesday morning; September 11, 2001, nineteen Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and other Arab nat ions boarded four fully fueled American airliners. These airliners were set to depart to cities in California. Little did the staff for each of the planes or the people boarding them know that plans had changed. Within the space of an hour, al Qaeda wreaked more direct damage on the United States than the Soviet Union had done throughout the entire cold war, a tragedy seen by more people than any other event in history. (Bergen, 2006) Many questions were garnered after September 11, 2001. What caused this horrific attack and whoââ¬â¢s to blame for it? Was this attack forecasted, could we have seen it coming and prevented it? What do we do now and how do we prevent it from happening again? People in America were terrified but at the same time came together in the face of tyranny. On September 11, 2001, nineteen militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda boarded and hijacked four American airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. At 8:45 a.m. an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a huge, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, immediately killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident. Then, eighteen minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767ââ¬âUnited Airlines Flight 175ââ¬âappeared out of the sky, turned abruptly toward the World Trade Center and sliced into the south tower near the 60th floor. The impact caused a massive explosion that rained down burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. It was at this point everyone knew America was under attack. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) As millions were watching the events unfold in New York, American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., and crashed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. Jet fuel from the Boeing 757 caused a overwhelming firestorm that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the enormous concrete building. All told, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) It was initially thought that this plane was bound for the White House or the Capitol Building; however, because of lack of visibility coming from the west as it did objects obscured these targets making the terrorists change their plans and crash into the Pentagon. (Limbacher, 2001) Less than fifteen minutes after the attack on the Pentagon; things became much worse in New York. The south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed bringing a huge cloud of smoke and dust. The building that could withstand 200 miles per hour winds, could not withstand the heat of the burning jet fuel and eventually the structural steel buckled and collapsed. Within minutes the North tower fell to the same fate. Approximately 3,000 people were killed, both inside the buildings as well as people in the vicinity. An extremely large number of firefighters and paramedics (343), police officers (23), and Port Authority police officers (37) were killed while trying to complete an evacuation of the buildings. Only six people in the World Trade Center towers at the time of their collapse survived. (9/11 Attacks, 2012). During the time that the towers were collapsing, a fourth plane bound for San Francisco, CA was being hijacked. Due to this plane being delayed in taking off, the passengers on board learned of the events transpiring in New York City and Washington D.C. through the use of the Airfones and cell phone calls from relatives on the ground. Since the passengers knew that this plane was not bound for an airport they decided to take matters into their own hands. The passengers fought the four hijackers and are suspected to have attacked the cockpit with a fire extinguisher. The plane flipped over and sped toward the ground at a speed of upwards of 500 miles per hour, crashing in a rural field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m. All 45 people aboard were killed. Its initial target has never been completely determined; however, it is believed that it was bound for the White House, the U.S. Capitol, or one of several nuclear power plants along the eastern seaboard. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) The people aboard Flight 93 have been deemed heroes, as their actions that day saved possibly hundreds if not thousands of lives. After being transported around the country due to security concerns, President George W. Bush returned to the White House around 7 p.m. At 9 p.m. he addressed the United States from the Oval Office, affirming, ââ¬Å"Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. In a reference to the eventual U.S. military response he declared, We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) As a result of the attacks, America led an international operation to expel the Taliban command in Afghanistan and to destroy al Qaedaââ¬â¢s terrorist cells based there. Operation Enduring Freedom began on October 7th 2001, and within two months U.S. forces had successfully overthrown and removed the Taliban from operational power. However, the war had to continue as U.S. and coalition forces attempted to expel a Taliban insurgency in neighboring Pakistan. Many of the al Qaedaââ¬â¢s top lieutenants were captured or killed, to include its bin Ladenââ¬â¢s second in charge and the overall mastermind of the attacks Ayman al-Zawahiri. (McCarthy Luke Harding, 2002) Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda and financier of the September 11 attacks was able to escape U.S. forces until he was finally traced to a hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan and killed by U.S. forces on May 2, 2011. (9/11 Attacks, 2012) As Americans, when a tragedy like September 11, 2001 happens to us, our first reaction is obviously to be frightened. We then came together as a country much like we did after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Our next reaction is to ask questions; how did this happen, could we have avoided it happening, why did it happen, and how do we prevent it from happening again. There are many theories as to why 9/11 happened; however, we will never know for sure, we can only speculate based off information provided to us by our government and media. U.S. foreign policy is believed to be one of the most influential reasons for the attacks. Bin Laden opposed the United States support of Israel. The support that the U.S. gives to Israel especially Israelââ¬â¢s invasion of southern Lebanon in 1982 triggered Bin Ladenââ¬â¢s anti-Americanism. In 1980s his anti-Americanism took the form of boycotting U.S. goods. His hatred only grew by the export of 500,000 U.S. troops to Saudi Arabia after Saddam H usseinââ¬â¢s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. (Bergen, 2006) Other possible reasons or causes for the attacks were a clash within Islam. Michael Scott Doran talked about 9/11 being a result of a conflict within the Muslim world in a Foreign Affairs essay, Somebody Elseââ¬â¢s Civil War. Doran contended that Bin Ladenââ¬â¢s followers consider themselves an island of true believers surrounded by a sea of immorality and think that the future of religion itself, and therefore the world depends on them and their battle. In particular, Egyptians in al Qaeda, such as Ayman al-Zawahiri, hold this view, inheriting it from Sayyid Qutb, who believed that most of the modern middle east is living in a state of pagan ignorance. The Egyptian jihadists believed that they should overthrow the near enemy-middle east regimes run by apostate rulers. Bin Laden took the next step, urging Zawahiri that the origin of the problem was not the near enemy but the far enemy, the US, which supported the status quo in the middle east. (Doran, 2002) Globalization and a desire to provoke the United States have been inferred by political analysts as possible motives for the attacks. Bernard Lewis wrote a book called The Crisis of Islam: Holy War and Unholy Terror. He is the best-known advocate of the idea that the Muslim world is in a crisis largely attributable to centuries of decline, represented by the fate of the once powerful Ottoman Empire and its humiliating carve-up by the British and French after the First World War. Lewis also contends that the problems of the Middle East were later compounded by the introduction of two western ideas; socialism and a worldly Arab nationalism. Neither of them delivered on their assurances of creating wealthy and impartial societies. (Lewis, 2003) Three weeks after 9/11, as the US began launching air strikes against Taliban positions, a video of Bin Laden sitting on a rocky ridge was broadcast on Al-Jazeera. On the tape, Bin Laden stated, What America is tasting now is something insignificant compared to what we have tasted for scores of years. The Islamic world has been tasting this humiliation and this degradation for 80 years Neither America nor the people who live in it will dream of security before we live in it in Palestine, and not before the infidel armies leave the land of Muhammad. Bin Laden accentuated the humiliation of the Muslim world and the negative effect of US policies in the Middle East thus agreeing with Bernard Lewisââ¬â¢ statements in his book. (Bergen, 2006) Obviously one of the most defining negative impacts of 9/11 was the amount of lives lost on September 11, 2001; as well as the number of lives still in jeopardy as a result of the ââ¬Å"War on Terrorâ⬠. The 9/11 attack killed 2,973 people, including Americans and foreign nationals but excluding the terrorists. (U.S. deaths in Iraq, war on terror surpass 9/11 toll, 2006) Since the beginning of the Afghan War (Operation Enduring Freedom) in 2001 up to the current day, there have been 2,104 U.S. servicemen and women who have lost their lives. That number includes both combat deaths as well as military suicides that occurred in Afghanistan. (Suarez, 2012) Although the War in Iraq was not directly linked to 9/11, the attacks help jump start that war since the initial reasoning for going to war was Iraq harboring terrorists and having a surplus of weapons of mass destruction. The total number of American soldiers that have been killed to date as a result of Operation Iraqi Freedom is 4486 lives. (Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, 2012) The ââ¬Å"Patriot Actâ⬠could be looked upon as a positive outcome of the 9/11 attacks. The ââ¬Å"Patriot Actâ⬠was appropriately blatant. Before 9/11, soldiers were considered the ââ¬Å"patriotsâ⬠; units like Special Forces were considered to be the tip of freedom. Now the FBI and prosecutors were to have that same privilege, the same authorization to hunt down enemies without much oversight or interference. When it was signed into law six weeks after the attacks, the act made it easier to wiretap American citizens suspected of cooperating with terrorism, to investigate business records without notification, and to execute search warrants without immediately informing the targets. Privileges once set aside for overseas intelligence work were extended to domestic criminal investigations. There was less judicial oversight and very little transparency. The billââ¬â¢s symbolism mattered also, signaling that the moral deference previously given to the Special Forces would be extended until it incorporated much of the apparatus of the American state. (Wallace-Wells, 2011) There are some that feel that Americans civil rights have been violated since 9/11. The ACLU for instance, they disagree with the principles of the Patriot Act. They summarized that ââ¬Å"The Patriot Actâ⬠enormously and unconstitutionally expanded the governmentââ¬â¢s power to interfere in peopleââ¬â¢s private lives with little or no evidence of wrongdoing. Years after its enactment, there is little evidence to prove that the Patriot Act has made America more secure from terrorists. But there are many unfortunate examples that the government abused these authorities in ways that both violated the rights of innocent people and misspent precious security resources.â⬠(Dean, 2011) September 11, 2001 will be a day that stays in every Americans memory as one of the most tragic days in American history. It was a day where hijackers boarded planes, flew them into our buildings and murdered thousands of Americans. Even though as a country we prevailed in the War on Terror as well as the War in Iraq, we will continue to feel the negative impacts of this day. One definite positive outcome is that every American citizen remembered what it was to be an American citizen and to treasure the freedom that we have. To all the Americans that lost their lives on that day and all the soldiers that continue to fight for our freedom at home and abroad; We Will Never Forget You. The Applications and Making of Artificial Diamonds Essay -- Diamond Di
The Applications and Making of Artificial Diamonds Diamonds are very unique. Their hardness and beauty have enticed people for many years. Now some of the same attributes that make them appealing also make them useful. To understand these attributes the chemistry of carbon is very important. This unique chemistry is what makes them so hard to make. Much research has gone into the making of diamonds and this has led to many successes in the field. These discoveries have led to machines and processes that make diamond making more efficient and reliable. Of course, all of this research and discoveries would not be sought after if it was not for the many applications of diamonds. This is true for cosmetic, industrial and electronic purposes. Diamonds can be very complex but have many uses. The chemistry of diamonds is very interesting. Diamonds are composed mainly of carbon. Carbon can also exist as graphite, in a carbon chain or as buckminsterfullerene. It never forms bonds and leaves unshared electron pairs. In graphite the carbon atoms form an sp2 bonds. In this type of bonding an electron of the s orbital jumps to the p orbital to complete the octet with the other carbon atoms. When this happens it causes the orbital to flatten and the result is one big lattice in a two dimensional plane (Oxtoby). These lattices are attracted to each other not bonded to each other in compounds of graphite. Although they are made of the same carbon the diamond compound is different because of the type of bonds. Each atom forms four directional sp3 bonds instead of the three resonating bonds in graphite. This allows the diamond to keep its tetrahedral shape. It is also what makes the diamond so hard. The tetrahedral sh... ... January 1999. Elert, Glenn. ââ¬Å"Presuures Used to Create Artificial Diamonds.â⬠1998. Frogley, Elizabeth. ââ¬Å"Really Good Fake Diamonds.â⬠November 6, 2002. Case 5-2: Lexsteel Corporation
What should the controller of Lexsteel do in order to address the potential problems within the corporation? â⬠¢The controller became aware of the potential problems with the accounts payable system because of the discussion made with the external auditors. â⬠¢Each branch manager is given the authority to order materials and issue emergency purchase orders directly to the vendors. â⬠¢Physical counts of raw materials are not performed since there is a cost-effective computerized perpetual inventory system. â⬠¢COMPUTER RESOURCES: The host computer mainframe at corporate headquarters is linked to the computers at each branch locations. Data transmission occurs between leased telephone lines between host computer and branch offices wherein it is maintained in an integrated database. The software also allows flexibility for managing user access and editing data input meaning there is no control over the software for it allows data editing without the proper authorization given. â⬠¢PURCHASING PROCEDURES: The production orders and appropriate bills of materials needed are generated by the host computer at corporate headquarters. While the purchase orders for raw materials are generated by the purchasing function and is mailed to the vendors which contain an instruction to the vendor that the materials should be directly delivered to the manufacturing plant. There is a control between the generation of production orders needed and the purchase orders issued to the vendor but it is not an exception in the occurrence of fraud. At receipt, the manufacturing plant examines and verifies the count against the packing slip and transmits the receiving data to the accounts payable at corporate headquarters. Even though there is a proper segregation between custody and recording, still fraud may occur because of collusion. Also, each branch manager is given the authority to order materials and issue emergency purchase orders directly to the vendors. Fraud may also occur if collusion will be made by the branch manager and the vendor, with that proper control is a must. Since the company employs a cost effective computerized perpetual inventory system, physical counts of raw materials are not performed. With that, the generation of production orders and purchase orders may be deceived because the count of raw materials that are needed are not matched with the proper physical count on its ending inventory. â⬠¢ACCOUNTS PAYABLE PROCEDURES: Vendor invoices are mailed directly to the corporate headquarters and entered by the accounts payable personnel when received. This often occurs before the branch offices transmit the receiving data so the recorded vendor invoices are not properly matched with the receiving report. Uncertainties of amount may exist. The checks and the payment listings are made by the accounts payable function and are transmitted to the treasurerââ¬â¢s office for signature and mailing to the payee. After validation, payment listings are returned to the accounts payable section for filing. In here, there is no proper control in the preparation and validation of checks and payment listings for the verification of it is not done which may result into collusion and creation of dummy payee made by the treasurerââ¬â¢s office and the accounts payable function.
